The Café - Series One

The Cafe, Series One

Written by Ralf Little and Michelle Terry
Directed by Craig Cash

Cyril’s Café sits on the picturesque Weston Super Mare seafront and is run by generational trilogy Mary, Carol and Sarah. Weston is a place of sanctuary for Sarah who has returned home to nurse her heartbreak and work on her writing portfolio. Her friends are always popping by for a latte and a gossip, as are Mary and Carol’s. But with other customers few and far between when local businesswoman, Brenda Kiely, puts in an offer on the lease Carol is torn. Can she afford to keep Cyril’s open or will she have to accept Brenda’s offer and sell up?

Across the series we follow the characters endeavors to keep the café open and watch friendships and romances blossom across the generations.

The first six episodes of The Café were broadcast on Sky 1 HD in November and December 2011. A second series has been commissioned.

The bittersweet story of three generations of the Crosby family.

Bing (Steve Coogan) has been fascinated with gambling since he was a child but when his gambling spirals out of control and his losses reach unsustainable levels, the only thing left to lose is his family.

Suffused with warmth and laughter, Sunshine is above all a heart-warming story about how when you reach rock bottom the only thing that matters are the people you love.

"Usually dramas about addiction are a misery to watch, but this one manages to remain upbeat in spite of its subject matter. Sunshine doesn't avoid the nasty stuff, but it is balanced by an abundance of warmth, good humour and humanity."

David Chater, The Times, 14th October 2008

"That Sunshine succeeds so effectively as both comedy and drama is down to a witty and original script by Craig Cash and Phil Mealey combined with a very impressive performance from Coogan, who manages to strike just the right note between amiable and infuriating, amusing and appalling. Indeed, Sunshine is so well done that it is almost too painful to watch."
